Party Ideas: Sherlock Holmes

Tuesday, February 04, 2014Your Friend Elle

The words 'Sherlock' and 'Party' aren't usually put in the same sentence, at least not in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's series. But I've been thinking about this one for a while. I love to decorate and if you can't tell by now, I love Sherlock Holmes. A party doesn't have to cost a whole lot either if done correctly. All it takes is a little effort and a dash of imagination. Below, I've put together a list of ideas for a Sherlock Holmes inspired party. Take from it what you will, leave a comment below if you have any suggestions or if you do have a Sherlock party I want to see pictures!

Party Grand Total $71, give or take (shipping, tax, etc.)

Invitations - $?
A lost art is invitations. Used to be a big
deal to send invites to a party, now we get
Facebook invites. These can be fun if done
right. Make sure to say something cleaver in
the invitation!

Images from and

Beakers - $2.06
Sherlock's desk is always messy. Lucky for you,
this means easy decorating. Beakers are pretty cheap,
fill them with various liquids (food coloring) and it'll
look really cool!

Graduated Cylinders - £3.52
These are supposedly the same cylinders that
were used in the show. I'm sure you can find them
elsewhere on Google Shopping.

Wall Art - $?
Use some old colored paper you have lying
around and cut out some designs. For example,
Rache, 221 B (how else will they find the party?),
smiley face (with bullet marks).

Victorian Pictures - $3.90
Throw back to some vintage Sherlock with these
images, or make your own!

Stick Signs - $0.79
Make whatever treats you like and stick
a sign in them! Makes for good sandwich holders
as well. Get creative and use whatever images
you like!

Games - $?
Print these out and give clues to the squares.
Get creative and make your own as well!
You can also do a Guess the Quote,
or Guess the Story game!

Magnifying Glass - $3.99/12 pieces
Course you have to have the Sherlock staple
at the party! These come pretty cheap, and you
can put them next to everyone's plate.

Caution Tape - $2.63
Don't go too wild with this, but it looks
really cool if done correctly! This could
also be found at a party store.

Books - $?
This could get a little pricey, but if you
find these at a second hand shop, it shouldn't
set you back too far. Also, a great party favor!

Get Sherlock Window - $0.86
Window paint isn't that expensive so feel
free to write whatever you'd like up there.
Though, 'Get Sherlock' is suggested.

Skull - $5.26
You can get two uses out of this own,
put it out at your Halloween party as well!

Tea Cups - $5
Only invest in these if you're going to use
them again. Otherwise, go to your local
consignment shop and spend a couple bucks.
They may not match, but it'll save you some cash.

Pillow $10 & Flag $1
This is another one that you should only
invest in if you're going to use it later.
Amazon has quite a lot of options!

Clue Board Game - $10
I already own this game, but if you don't
you can find it at places like Target for $10.

Specialty Drink - Bloody Lemonade - $5
Feel free to make of your own custom drinks,
or just rename the old ones for fun!
Having a menu of the drinks available is
also a good idea.

Cake - $15
You can make so many kinds of
cakes, but the Smiley one and the Union
Jack one above are good ideas!
